Having the right technology is a key success factor in managing onboard retail projects. Airlines, railways and ferry operators worldwide can now operate more powerful, flexible and secure sales programs by partnering with gategroup member eGate Solutions.

eGate Solutions, the global provider of software and services for onboard service management, has expanded its service offering through gategroup’s purchase of Schaumburg, Ill.-based Abanco LLC’s assets and related software dedicated to the onboard retail environment. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. gategroup previously had offered the technology through a partnership with Abanco.

The addition of Abanco’s wireless electronic point-of-sale (ePOS) technology complements eGate Solutions’ signature InFlight Exchange suite of business applications. The ePOS device has a robust onboard payment processing system for credit card, cash or smartcard transactions, combining an easy-to-use hand-held terminal with the latest in onboard sales technology. Formerly known as SkyBuy, it will now be offered as eGate Solutions TS4.

Powered by a separate wireless communications network, the eGate Solutions TS4 device processes transactions securely and meets the highest security levels required by Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. This means customers are protected by a CISP-certified, PCI Level 1 Service Provider operating environment.

Operating like a mobile cash register, the eGate Solutions TS4 ePOS device features a barcode scanner and thermal printer and can reconcile real-time sales to inventory, reducing shrinkage. It also can be programmed to identify passengers’ buying trends, among other reporting functions.
Additionally, members of Abanco’s professional and dedicated work force will join the eGate Solutions team to provide ongoing development and customer support to TS4 users. eGate Solutions offers 24-hour, 365-day support to quickly respond to immediate needs.

“For me, this partnership will be great. It will be great because both companies will be able to share/combine their IT knowledge for them to develop/create an Information System which will be helpful to them and to other people”

Unilever is beginning a trial to test a new technology that lets consumers redeem digital coupons by having a supermarket cashier scan their mobile phones. Interest in Mobile coupons is growing day by day and these tests will allow Unilever to understand the use of them.

The test, being conducted at a ShopRite store in Hillsborough, N.J., will include discount offers for some of the Anglo-Dutch packaged-goods company’s most popular brands, including Breyers ice cream, Dove soap, Hellmann’s mayonnaise and Lipton tea. Samplesaint, a Chicago mobile-technology firm, developed the system.

This has been a Holy Grail thing that people have been trying to figure out, says Marc Shaw, director of integrated marketing at Unilever, the first major marketer to test such a service in the U.S. “I think this is on target for where consumers’ heads are at right now.”

To get the coupons, customers must visit the Web site Samplesaint.com, from which they can transmit the Unilever discount offers to an Internet-enabled cellphone. At checkout, the cashier scans the bar code on the phone’s screen, redeeming the coupon and deleting it from the phone. The test will run for four weeks, and Mr. Shaw says he hopes to see it extended to other stores after that.

“I agree with what Marc Shaw said that it is complicated in figuring out how this process really works. For me, one problem that I see is that if people should have internet on their mobiles for them to transact, then how about the people who do not have internet access on their mobile phones? How can they benefit from this integrated process?

“Beneath its elegant, profiled contours and slimline, minimalist style, Elios also features an ultra-thin base housing a CPU which combines reliability and low power consumption, due to its 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor.

Elios’ key advantages are:

1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor offers reliability and lower power usage: a mere 2.5 watts

15″ display: ELO resistive touchscreen

Ruggedised, fanless design

Steel base provides optimum stability and acts as a heatsink.

Slimline, minimalist design/no messy cables (wiring is concealed in polycarbonate base)

Hard disk and motherboard housed separately (minimising the risk of overheating)

Tool-free access to the hard disk

Multiple communication ports

Optional magnetic card / RFID / biometric / Dallas key readers “

> This EPOS system is very helpful, not only is it flat and saves space, but it also helps in conserving environment, because it lessens the consumption of energy, with only 2.5 watts. Also some of it’s best features is the polycarbonate base which conceals the wires, because it makes the management and maintenance of the EPOS less hassle. Lastly, the feature that I also like is that the housing of the motherboard and hardisk is separate, which lessens overheating, and at the same time, it makes the data more secured compared when they are housed together. I think this new revolutionary EPOS will benefit not only the people but as well as the environment, because of the convenience it provide, and conserving energy at the same time.

In this article, Teaching Markets New M-Commerce Tricks, some countries in Europe and Asia appear to have much more robust mobile commerce and mobile payment environments than in the U.S., where consumers are just beginning to use such services. Previous infrastructural and institutional development in the U.S. can make it harder to deploy new systems, though some e-commerce operations are making headway.

Back in 1999, national mobile payments systems were introduced in the Philippines, as Smart Money, and in Japan with the launch of the first mobile Internet platform, mobile carrier NTT Docomo’s i-Mode.

How is it these countries went ahead with m-commerce and m-payment systems a decade ago, whereas the U.S. is still limping toward those goals? “Japan is structured very differently from the U.S., with a single dominant carrier, NTT,” Conrad Sheehan, founder and CEO of mobile payments specialist mPayy, told the E-Commerce Times. “Developing nations, on the other hand, have the key advantage of having little to no legacy infrastructure, be it wireline phones, robust ubiquitous ATM networks; or POS terminals.” Sheehan should know — he was a senior vice president at JP Morgan Chase, where he headed its consumer payments business.

In other developed nations, mobile commerce, or m-commerce, starts with mobile banking, then is followed by mobile payments and finally by mobile remittance, Diarmuid Mallon, senior product marketing manager at Sybase (NYSE: SY) 365, told the E-Commerce Times. That’s the pattern evolving here. Lots of U.S. banks now allow their customers to do banking from their mobile devices.

“In both cases, the m-commerce services that are successful focus on the consumers’ immediate needs,” Mallon said. “In developed markets, the initial need is to manage your finances, while in developing markets, bill payments and transferring money are the focus.”

Only 7 percent of all mobile subscribers had engaged in any sort of m-commerce within the past 30 days in the second quarter of 2009, according to Nielsen Mobile. Of these, only 25 percent made a purchase through their smartphones.

“The implication of this is that m-commerce in the U.S. is still in the early days,” Chris Quick, mobile media analyst at Nielsen Mobile, told the E-Commerce Times. However, m-commerce can quickly gain momentum as consumers continue to adopt smartphones and subscribe more to data plans. How quickly networks and other providers can build out their infrastructures is another factor. “Carriers, retailers and financial institutions have to deliver payment systems that consumers believe are 100 percent secure and private,” Quick explained.

Two leading retailers, Amazon and PayPal, are launching projects that might speed up the development of m-commerce here in the U.S.

Earlier this month, PayPal opened up its global payments platform, PayPal X, to application developers. It unveiled new application programming interfaces (APIs) as well as a new developer portal. It also demonstrated a mobile payment software development kit (SDK) that lets developers embed payments directly into mobile applications, starting with iPhone apps.

At around the same time, Amazon.com announced Amazon Mobile Payments Service. This gives developers, merchants and distributors of mobile apps a way to process payments from mobile devices.

***

Good news to Filipinos, since we are being recognized as one of the few countries who are using m-commerce for payments; using it for banking would be certainly on its way. Perhaps, why the U.S is still on the verge of beginning its m-commerce industry, is because of its markets’ structure, as it focused more on the banking sector to utilize m-commerce. But I’m pretty sure, that they’ll also catch up with the years ahead; the country should just have to clear things out and build its foundation on m-commerce suiting the nature and condition of its own economy.

On a second note, Amazon and Paypal are also doing a very splendid job for opening services which will enable countries, particularly the U.S, to tap the power of smartphones in doing business. Through the Paypal SDK, and Amazon’s payment service, businesses and individuals alike are surely going to experience the convenience of transacting using their mobile phones.

In this article, Apple Claims 100,000 Apps, Google Analyzes Them, Apple continues to lead in bragging rights for smartphone apps, while Google expands its free Web analytics for mobile developers. The smartphone app craze shows no sign of slowing down, as Apple today reports inventory in its pioneering App Store surpassed 100,000 and Google continues to expand its mobile app services.

“The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said in a statement. “The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating.”

Though the App Store launched in July 2008, it already boasts more than 2 billion downloads in 20 categories including games, digital books, news, health, business, travel and sports. Since then, competitors including Palm, Google and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, as well as wireless carriers Verizon and Sprint have tried to catch up with their own app services and storefronts.

Given Google’s increasingly prominent role in mobile, it’s no surprise it continues to forge alliances to promote Android and increase its wireless services. Given Google’s increasingly prominent role in mobile, it’s no surprise it continues to forge alliances to promote Android and increase its wireless services. Mobile app developers can now get the same Google Analytics reports that provide insight into Web site traffic and engagement for their mini-programs running on iPhones and Android-powered handsets.

“As with Web sites, there are two basic categories of user interaction you can track: pageviews and events. Since mobile apps don’t contain HTML pages, developers simply determine when their apps should trigger pageview requests. Google Analytics then aggregates this data in the Content reports to display the number of visits, session length and bounce rates. The data gives insight into how your users interacted with the app,” Meredith Papp, of the Google mobile ads team, said in a blog post.

Developers can also use the “event tracking” tool to evaluate visitor actions that don’t correspond directly to pageviews. For instance, these actions could be views of embedded videos, button clicks or downloads.

“App developers can then use this data to understand which features are most popular and inform decisions about which features should be promoted or prioritized for further development,” said Papp.

***

There are 2 sides in the story obviously, Apple’s stagerring app downloads and Google’s Android now coupled with Google analytics. I give credit for Apple for opening opportunities to developers through the iPhone SDK to create their apps using the platform, and equally I commend Google for bundling their mobile presence with their Analytics.

Now developers are more informed of how their apps are performing- downloads, pageviews, user behavior etc. This is another smart move by Google to empower the community, not only by the features of Android, but how developers can now track user behavior to be informed of better decisions. That’s the power of Google Analytics, now on the smartphone market!
